Sony's Z2 Phone allows You Shoot 4K Video Underwater

Electronics manufacturer Sony At the big Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona this week, is kicking things off with the launch of two new waterproof Android devices, the Xperia Z2 smartphone and Z2 tablet. Industry watchers also expect Samsung to announce that its new flagship, the Galaxy S5, will be waterproof as well. For the time being, however, it’s Sony’s time to shine or rain, as the case may be.

Waterproof devices used to be big and clunky, firmly in the “rugged” category. The Z2 line marks a move toward the mainstreaming of the technology. Waterproofing comes in handy a lot more than just the occasional trips to the beach, of course — as anyone who’s ever been caught in a downpour or had an unfortunate smartphone-related incident at the loo will tell you.

Both Z2 devices use the Live Color LED technology the company features in its HDTVs, stretched out over 5.2 inches on the phone and 10.1 in the case of the tablet. The company promises richer colors and brighter screens than the competition.

And while neither device is capable of displaying full 4K video, the phone, with a 20.7 megapixel sensor, is actually able to capture it. So if you do find yourself under the waves with smartphone in-hand, you can capture some ultra high-def video while you’re down there.

The Z2 Tablet doesn’t have the same camera as the phone, but both devices do feature Sony’s digital noise cancelation, to deliver better audio quality in noisy places — like, say, the middle of a rainstorm.

Both Z2s are due out next month.
