I share with you some profile of just a few scholars expected amongst the many erudite scholars who would be pouring out knowledge from their cistern to Conference participants.
Professor Magaret Okorodudu-Fubara
Professor Margaret Okorodudu-Fubara is a 1972 graduate
of the University of Lagos with a distinguished record in environmental law
consulting and university teaching. She was called to the Bar in 1973. She
obtained the LL.M and SJD degrees in 1977 and 1980, respectively, from Harvard
Law School, USA, after a first LL.M. degree from the University of London, UK
in 1975. Professor Okorodudu-Fubara, a former Dean of the Faculty of Law,
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria (1995 – 2000), is widely published
in reputable national and international journals and is the author of the first
Nigerian text book on environmental law. Professor Okorodudu-Fubara was granted
the Senior Fulbright Scholar Award, 1990/91 and the Robert S. McNamara (World
Bank) Fellow,1990/91 to undertake overseas sabbatical as Visiting Scholar at
the St. Mary’s University School of Law, San Antonio, Texas, USA, 1990/91. She
was appointed Visiting Professor at the School of Law, University of Oregon,
Eugene, Oregon, USA, 2001/02 where she taught Comparative Environmental Law.
She was appointed Consultant for the United Nations Environment Programme,
Nairobi, Kenya, 2002/03 engaged as part of the team to prepare a Draft Manual
on the UNEP Guidelines on Compliance with and Enforcement of Multilateral
Environmental Agreements. Professor Okorodudu-Fubara is a member of the IUCN
and Associate Member of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. She was
appointed by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria Member of the National Universities Commission in
2009. In 2012 she was appointed Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Professor
of Taxation (Professorial Chair).
Professor MKC Sridhar
Professor Mynepalli Kameswara Chandra Sridhar was born
in Vellatur (Andhra Pradesh, India). He obtained a M.Sc. (1964) in Biochemistry
from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda and Ph.D. degree (1971) from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He moved to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria
in October 1977 and became Professor of Environmental Health in 1986. He occupied several positions in the College
of Medicine, Head of Environmental Health Unit, Director of Ibarapa Primary
Healthcare Programme, First Head of Epidemiology, Medical Statistics and
Environmental Health, and others. He initiated MPH (Environmental Health)
programme in 1993 and trained over 200 students at postgraduate level. He
developed ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiatives, notable among them are organic
fertilizer from wastes, biogas, and renewable resources recovery and
utilization. He has been a Consultant for Federal Ministry of Health, Federal
and State Ministries of Environment, UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank (ALCO – Abidjan-Lagos Corridors
Project), some NGOs and industries. He has several patents and over 250
publications in books and international Journals and is a Member / Fellow of
professional bodies and Societies in Environmental Health Sciences.
Professor Jerome Nriagu
Jerome Nriagu got
his degrees from the Universities of Ibadan, Nigeria (BSc and meritorious DSc),
MS (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and PhD (University of Toronto,
Canada). His research and teaching
programs center around three main issues: (i) sources, behavior, fate and
effects of metals in the natural and contaminated environments; (ii)
environmental injustice; and (iii) environmental health problems in the
developing countries. He has been
involved in global health research and training in many countries. He has
published over 300 scientific articles (including 12 in Nature and Science
journals), authored/edited 30 books and one encyclopedia of five volumes. He is listed as one
of the most cited scientists in the fields of Environmental Studies and
Ecology. Before joining the University of Michigan in 1993, he was a senior
research scientist with Environment Canada in Ontario. Prof. Nriagu was
Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Science
of the Total Environment and Founding
Editor of Global Health Perspectives(soon to be launched). Prof. Nriagu is
a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has received a Senior Fulbright
Fellowship and the Alexander van Humboldt Distinguished Research Prize in 2009.
