The Royal Rumble- BY Oghaghare Ese Freeman

With nostalgia I watch as events in the political scene unfolds before our eyes. The die is cast, the stage is set. It’s time to rumble

With the effective registration of the All Progressive Congress Party(APC), an alliance of opposition parties coming together with a common goal – to dislodge the ruling party; it seems all is set for a Royal Rumble.

I chose my words very carefully in writing this piece; I said and repeat for emphasize, “an alliance of opposition parties coming together to dislodge” and not to provide a veritable alternative to governance.

I congratulate Professor Jega, the electioneering Scribe for taking the right step and decision in registering the APC. As an apostle and supporter of a two party system of governance, I wholeheartedly welcome its registration. It evens-up the political space and deepens the polity.

Whilst we celebrate with them, many questions are left unanswered. What agreements exist amongst the various political gladiators coming together to form this Party? What is the Party Ideology? Do they have a people oriented Manifesto? Is the Party a Regional or a Sectarian Party? These are but a few questions we need ask ourselves before Nigerians mortgage her future and that of future generations to some few old cohorts.
With these many questions in my mind, as an individual I become indifferent, not moved and feel less or no passion towards the APC.

The change we so desire is in no sight. Forgive me my readers for I may sound pessimistic but I must confess, all I see is a conglomerate of a set of new thieves intermingling with some sub-set of disgruntled PDP members who no longer hold sway in the PDP; wanting power at all cost.

We wait with much anticipation to follow-up events to see exactly what Party mechanism would be employed in choosing her Presidential Candidate. Are they going to be characterized by the intrigues we are so used to? Time shall tell. If you must know my view, let me share it with you. Something tells me the largesse had since been shared amongst the godfathers.

At this point let me posit that the APC has got the chance to lay claim to some good geographical space but ehmm…. Well this may not represent a good number of people. In a matter of time we shall know if it’s a National Party or one defined by regions.

For us, political analyst, events in the polity such as these gives us as much to talk and write about. Lest I forget GEJ has learnt so well from the Master himself and has since unleashed his dogs the EFCC on his political enemies in Rivers State. They lurk in every corner seeking for whom to devour. The President’s foot soldiers; Evans Bipi and Wike Nyesome wield enormous power backed by the State apparatus.

Only in Nigeria will a common Minister threaten the peace and tranquility of State without being investigated and prosecuted for fomenting trouble and threatening the peace in the land.

ASUU is on strike but that doesn’t seem a problem to a minister paid with tax payer’s funds. He finds time instead to shuttle between Nigeria and England possibly with tax payer's fund to see a criminal who invaded the house with thugs; just so unlucky to be caught with his own maze (too bad). We wish him a speedy recovery.

Honorable Minister, Nigerian Youth of which am one are fed-up. We are tired of feeding from the crumbs from our parents table. Answer our tutors and allow us the privilege to return to our moribund dormitories and facilities (At-all At all dem say na witch). Concentrate on your job. Being a Governor is not a Birthright. It’s a privilege.

A word of advice to a revered erudite scholar; Professor Wole Soyinka. A nobel laureate recipient certainly not in sight for Nigeria in the nearest future. We still love you and want to savor every moment till you pass on. On the planned protest in Rivers; please Sir hid the warning. It doesn’t cost much to put those miscreants on the streets. You witnessed what happened to the visiting governors more or less a man without bullet proof cars.

Remember, you can take the hippo away from the swamps but not the swamp from the hippo. They have since not forgotten. They may want to give you a taste of the swamp. I bet you it doesn’t smell nice. Mr Mbu cannot and will not guarantee your safety. Your words go farther than you can think.

Let me visit the APC before I sign up, you get All Person’s Confused (APC). Too early a fight, though not confirmed. Your worst nightmare is to present Buhari as your Presidential candidate. Then I can tell you the end from the beginning just like you would do a Nollywood film. You would actually put the PDP in an early celebratory mood. His antecedence is in the public domain and is well known. I need not mention them.

Such a decision is not only catastrophic but heart aching. We don’t need a sympathy vote for no one this time.

Come 2015, we look forward to a real challenge. Someone with an appeal that cuts across all divides. Someone who looks like a Real Alternative.  Someone from any Region that represents change. Someone who can take the fight to the 12th Round. Someone on whom we can thrust our hopes and aspirations.
As events exudes actions; we watch and pray. Just maybe its time to shout Eureka.
